Fire Safety Certificates (Ireland)
In Ireland, certain building works require approval through a Fire Safety Certificate issued by the relevant local authority.
While VRF does not apply for or issue Fire Safety Certificates, we support projects by ensuring that wireless fire alarm systems are designed, supplied and documented in line with approved project requirements.
What is a Fire Safety Certificate?
A Fire Safety Certificate is a statutory approval granted by a local authority confirming that a building design complies with fire safety requirements under Irish building regulations.
It is typically required for:
- New buildings
- Material alterations or extensions
- Certain changes of use
The certificate relates to the overall fire safety design of the building, not just the fire alarm system.
The Role of Fire Alarm Systems in the Fire Safety Certificate Process
Fire detection and alarm systems form part of the wider fire safety strategy considered during the Fire Safety Certificate process.
This may include:
- The type of fire alarm system proposed
- Detection coverage and zoning
- System integration within the overall fire strategy
- Alignment with approved building design
The final system installed should reflect the approved design documentation.
VRF's Role in Projects Requiring a Fire Safety Certificate
VRF does not prepare or submit Fire Safety Certificate applications.
Our role is to support contractors, project teams and building owners by:
- Providing technical input on wireless fire alarm system capability
- Supporting system design in line with project specifications
- Supplying proven wireless fire alarm systems
- Assisting with system commissioning and certification on completion
We work alongside consultants, designers, contractors and building owners to ensure the installed system aligns with project requirements.
Fire Safety Certificates and System Upgrades
In some cases, fire alarm system upgrades or alterations may form part of
broader works that require Fire Safety Certificate approval.
Where this applies, it is important that:
- System design reflects approved documentation
- Installation aligns with project specifications
- Certification and records are properly maintained
Structured surveys and design input help ensure alignment between approved
plans and installed systems.
